We’re wrapping things up on the MYStuff 1.4 release, and it will be available tomorrow. This is probably the biggest update since the original release last year, so we’re pretty excited about it. Much of the work was behind-the-scenes stuff to pave the way for a bunch of new exciting features, but there are a few things you’ll notice.

The biggest news is long-awaited support for moving your MYStuff data to your Dropbox or iDisk account, file server, USB flash drive, or any other location. Simply open the Preferences, click “Copy & Move”, and select your new location.

MYStuff also has a new “All Records” category that allows you to easily see everything in your database at once.

There were a bunch of little enhancements throughout, but the biggest “little” enhancement is that MYStuff’s interface now works much better on MacBooks and other machines with smaller screen resolution (1280 x 800).

Overall, we think you’ll be pleased with the update, and we can’t wait to hear your feedback.

We’re happy to announce that MYStuff 1.4 is in beta and will be released shortly. This update will bring the much-requested feature of built-in changing the location of the MYStuff data repository, making it easy to move your data to a file server or an off-site online data storage location such as Dropbox or your iDisk.

While we finish work on the update, we’re announcing our Independence Day Sale: just enter the promotion code LIBERTY at checkout, and we’ll knock $11.24 of the price of MYStuff, bringing it to the patriotic price of just $17.76 until midnight July 9th, EST.

The old programmer’s adage holds true: “The definition of a software upgrade: take old bugs out, put new bugs in.”

Thursday, we released MYStuff 1.3.2, which closed a bunch of bugs (and added two little features.)

Friday we received feedback from a user that after updating, MYStuff stopped working. Ouch. We worked with her to gather some diagnostic information and found out that one of our little features was only compatible with Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) and as such it was crashing MYStuff under older versions of the OS. And we remembered that we forgot to test the 1.3.2 update on our 10.5.8 test machine prior to release.

We fixed the bug this morning and posted an update, all the while chanting “take old bugs out, put new bugs in”. Though technology may change, sadly, I don’t think anything will change the perpetual existence of software bugs.

We’re pretty excited about this release. In addition to the mandatory bugfixes, we’ve added two really nice features:

CSV Import: Import data from MYStuff exports, as well as Delicious Library, Home Inventory, Know Your Stuff, Paperless, and WarrantyHero. As you can see from our feature comparison chart, MYStuff is the best application at what it does. If you have a lot of data in one of these other programs, now you’re no longer stuck there. (And now the disclaimer: We’ve made every effort to import as much data from these other programs as possible, but due to how the other programs save and export data, some data won’t transfer properly or at all.)

FileFinder Search Tab: I did this feature for me, and hopefully everyone else will like it too. I love to have manuals for everything I own, and now there are lots of manuals making their way online as PDF files. With this feature, it grabs the Manufacturer and Model info you have entered for the Record, formats a Google search query, and opens it in your default browser. From here you can easily add what you find to your Record. Check out the screencasts to see it in action.

Download MYStuff 1.3

We’re wrapping up work on our next update to MYStuff. It has a few new features based on user requests, and a couple bugfixes in there as well. (And yes, the bug that occurs sometimes when moving a Record from one Category to another is fixed in this release.)

One of the most important things will be the inclusion of built-in bug submission and error reporting, which will speed up our ability to identify and squash bugs. This also means we will be taking down the user forums, since no one really used them much anyway. And while we’re at it, we’ll be doing some spring cleaning and freshening up the website.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the website Woot, it’s a wonderful obsession for people who are always looking for a good deal. Every day, they have one item for sale, for normally an unbeatable price. Once it’s sold out… it’s gone. The next day, they have something completely different for sale.

Once in a while, they have a “Woot-off”, where after selling out of something, another rock-bottom deal replaces it. A Woot-off typically lasts 24 hours, but sometimes they’ll run it for 48 or 72. You need lightning-fast reflexes and a touch of OCD to keep refreshing the Woot home page and snag some of the better deals. Fortunately, I have both.

Before I even loaded my collection of morning browser tabs, a friend IM’ed me that “there’s a good deal on a Dyson on the Woot-off this morning.” So I head over and see a limited edition DC-24 (Dyson Ball) Blueprint Limited Edition, brand new for $279 + $5 S&H. That’s $150 off retail. Now we’ve had a Kenmore upright vac for about 3 or so years. It does alright, but recently we’ve had some problems. Namely, that it won’t stay in bare floor/tool mode. And we have hardwood floors. Almost all hardwood floors. In addition, it keeps burning through belts. (And let me tell you, nothing says “clean house” like the smell of burnt rubber mixed with the scent of Pine-sol.) So I did what I always do when contemplating a purchase of more than $10: I waffled.

I IM’ed my wife to see what she thought. I made a pro’s and con’s list. I debated getting our current vacuum fixed. In the end I bought it. I used my credit card that adds an additional year warranty to the manufacturer’s 5-year warranty. And when I got to Woot’s “you successfully wooted” page (also known as a receipt), I hit Apple-P to print, and selected “Save PDF to MYStuff”. The PDF popped up in MYInbox, then I made a new Record and filled in the purchase and warranty sepcs. I then headed over to Google and did a Google Image search for the DC-24 Blueprint and drug the image from Safari straight to MYStuff. A quick trip to Dyson’s website, and I had a PDF of the manual saved directly to MYInbox, where I added it to the Record I created. (Quick Tip: I added MYInbox to my Finder sidebar, to make it easier to dump stuff there.)

In a nutshell, this exemplifies why we wrote MYStuff: We got sick and tired of replacing things that were probably under warranty, but the receipt and warranty information is long gone. We got sick and tired of filing and storing receipts and warranty paperwork, and having the time-wasting hassle of purging outdated stuff we don’t need anymore. We got sick and tired of rummaging around the house looking for manuals. In short, we got sick and tired of wasting our time and our money.

In total, I spent maybe 5 minutes creating the Record in MYStuff and adding things to it. Not a bad few minutes to secure the knowledge that for the next 6 years, I won’t have to worry about buying another vacuum and I’ll be able to find the manual when I need it. And our new vacuum isn’t even on the FedEx truck yet.
